Game Consoleゲーム機

When buying a game console in Japan, check two things. First, region lock and language: both Switch 2 and PS5 have cheaper "Japan only / Japanese only" editions. Second, voltage: Nintendo's AC adapter is 100–240V, while the Japanese PS5's built-in power supply supports AC100V only.

Before you buy a Game Console

  • The Switch 2 "日本語・国内専用" edition common in Japanese stores is Japanese-only and works only with a Japanese account. For other languages or regions, buy the "多言語対応" (multilingual) edition from the official store (about ¥10,000 more). More ›
  • The Japanese PS5 (including PS5 Pro) has a built-in power supply that supports AC100V only and will be damaged on 220V. The ¥55,000 "日本語専用" PS5 is also locked to Japanese and a Japanese account. More ›
  • Decide how you will play first (TV only, handheld only, or both), then check each platform's game lineup and language support, and finally compare prices. More ›
  • High-value items (such as PS5 Pro or high-end handheld PCs) may exceed your home country's duty-free allowance; check it before you buy. For travelers to mainland China, items over CNY 5,000 each may be taxed in full. More ›
  • Handhelds and handheld PCs have built-in lithium batteries; carry them on the plane, do not check them. More ›

Taking it home

  • Check the Switch 2 box: "日本語・国内専用" means Japanese language and a Japanese Nintendo Account only. For other languages, buy the "多言語対応" edition
  • The Japanese PS5 / PS5 Pro power supply supports AC100V only, so it cannot be plugged straight into 220V. Nintendo Switch adapters are 100–240V; make sure the range covers your local voltage
  • Japanese plugs are Type A (two flat pins). Check whether your outlets accept Type A; if not, you need a plug adapter
  • Handhelds, controllers, and handheld PCs have built-in lithium batteries and must go in carry-on, not checked baggage; over 100Wh requires airline approval
  • High-value items may exceed your home country's duty-free allowance. For travelers to mainland China, items over CNY 5,000 each (e.g. PS5 Pro, high-end handheld PCs) may be taxed in full, subject to customs practice
  • Consoles bought in Japan are generally warrantied only in Japan; keep your receipt and warranty card
