Before you buy a Cameras & Lenses

  • Choose the mount first: a lens only fits a body with the same mount, so if you already own lenses, pick a body for that mount. More ›
  • Japanese domestic warranties usually only apply in Japan; repairs after you get home follow the maker's local policy, so ask the store whether it can provide a warranty valid overseas. More ›
  • Menu languages vary by model and sales region, and Japanese domestic models don't always include your language, so switch the camera on in the store and check the language settings. More ›
  • Camera batteries and spare batteries must be carried on the plane, never checked; a battery left inside the camera in checked baggage requires the camera to be switched off. More ›
  • From November 1, 2026, Japan's tax-free system changes to paying tax first and getting a refund after confirmation at departure; you must spend at least 5,000 yen (excluding tax) at the same store on the same day. More ›

Taking it home

  • Spare camera batteries and batteries removed from the camera must be carried on, never checked; bag each one separately or fit terminal covers to prevent short circuits
  • A battery inside the camera can go in carry-on or checked baggage, but the camera must be fully switched off if checked; cameras and lenses are fragile, so carrying them on is recommended
  • Lenses have no battery and can go in carry-on or checked baggage
  • Tax-free purchases made from November 1, 2026 must be confirmed at the airport tax-free kiosk before you check your bags, because you can't get them back out after check-in
  • If cameras, lenses and your other purchases abroad exceed your destination's duty-free allowance, declare them at customs
