Japan has the fullest range of Japanese kitchen knives from KAI Seki Magoroku, GLOBAL, Tojiro, Misono, Sakai Takayuki and others. Knives aren't electrical, so voltage and plugs don't matter, but they can't go in your carry-on: pack them in checked baggage. Choose by blade shape, blade length, steel and how much care you're willing to give.
Pick the blade type first: a santoku (三徳包丁) handles vegetables and meat, so choose it if you're only buying one knife; if you're used to a Western kitchen, choose a gyuto; add a petty knife (ペティナイフ) for fruit and small ingredients. More ›
Check the blade length in the model name or on the box: santoku blades are usually 165–180mm and gyuto 180–210mm. Longer blades suit large ingredients but take more space. More ›
For low effort, choose a one-piece stainless knife the maker lists as dishwasher-safe. Damascus and clad-steel knives need more care: dry them after use and don't leave them soaking. More ›
Knives can't be carried onto the plane, only checked; make sure your trip includes a checked baggage allowance before you buy. More ›
From November 1, 2026, Japan's tax-free system changes to paying tax first and getting a refund after confirmation at departure; you must spend at least 5,000 yen (excluding tax) at the same store on the same day. More ›

Kitchen knives and petty knives can't be carried onto the plane, only checked; if security finds one you'll have to give it up or go back to the counter to check it
Before checking, wrap the blade in a sheath or the original box and pack it between clothes so it doesn't cut through your bag or injure anyone inspecting it
Tax-free purchases made from November 1, 2026 must be confirmed at the airport tax-free kiosk before you check your bags, because you can't get them back out after check-in
Some countries and regions restrict bringing in knives (for example by blade length or type), so check your destination's customs rules and your airline's policy before you travel
If knives plus your other purchases abroad exceed your destination's duty-free allowance, declare them at customs
