Snacks & Sweetsお菓子・スナック

Japan's everyday snacks sold at supermarkets, drugstores and Don Quijote: rice crackers, chocolate, candy, cookies and regional limited flavors. Most cost one or two hundred yen a box and count as ordinary prepackaged food; snacks containing meat, such as beef jerky, are banned or restricted by many countries' customs.

Before you buy a Snacks & Sweets

  • Before taking snacks home, check the ingredients (原材料名) on the back: skip anything with beef, pork, chicken or bacon (ビーフ, ポーク, チキン, ベーコン). Beef jerky is the most common trap. More ›
  • The same snack often differs by tens of yen between supermarkets, drugstores and Don Quijote; online multi-packs with shipping can end up pricier, so compare per-box prices. More ›
  • Regional limited flavors like "Kyoto only" or "Hokkaido only" are usually sold only at local souvenir shops, stations and airports, and cost more than regular versions. Buy them when you see them. More ›
  • From November 1, 2026, Japan's tax-free system changes to paying the tax-inclusive price first and getting a refund after it is confirmed at departure. You need at least ¥5,000 (excl. tax) at one store on the same day, so do the math when bundling snacks. More ›
  • Where to buy: drugstores, supermarkets and Don Quijote near stations all carry them; late-hours stores are handy for evening shopping sprees. More ›

Taking it home

  • Prepackaged snacks without meat (chocolate, cookies, candy, rice crackers) can go in carry-on or checked bags in reasonable personal-use amounts
  • Beef jerky, meat floss and snacks with bacon/ham are meat products (raw or cooked) and are prohibited for travelers to mainland China; many other countries restrict them too. Snacks with only "meat flavor" seasoning and no meat in the ingredients don't count, but those with meat extract (エキス) are a gray area
  • Eggs and butter baked into cookies are ingredients of processed food, and this site doesn't mark them as prohibited; puddings, cheese and other egg- or dairy-based sweets that need refrigeration are best left behind. Customs officers have the final say
  • Chocolate melts in heat: in summer it can soften in checked bags or a hot car, so consider an insulated bag
  • Mind your country's duty-free allowance: snacks count toward your total overseas purchases
