Can I use a Japanese PS5 back home?
We don't recommend it. As of October 2026, the PS5, PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro sold in Japan have built-in power supplies rated “100V” in the official manuals (100V 3.55A for the CFI-2000 and CFI-2200, 100V 4.2A for the CFI-7100 Pro), and the manuals say not to use travel transformers; plugging one into a 220–240V outlet will damage it. The 55,000-yen “Japanese language only” Digital Edition is also limited to Japanese and Japan-region PlayStation accounts, so if you want to play at home, buy the version sold for your region.
The short answer
| Model | Power (manual, “主な仕様”) | Max power draw | Use back home |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 CFI-2000A01 / Digital Edition CFI-2000B01 | 100V 3.55A 50/60Hz | 350W | Not designed for use outside 100V |
| PS5 Digital Edition Japanese language only CFI-2200B01 | 100V 3.55A 50/60Hz | 350W | Not designed for use outside 100V; also locked to Japanese/Japan region |
| PS5 Pro CFI-7100B01 | 100V 4.2A 50/60Hz | 390W | Not designed for use outside 100V |
| PlayStation Portal | USB-C charging | — | Charges fine, but needs your own PS5 to play |
Unlike the Nintendo Switch, the PS5's power supply is inside the console, so swapping the power cable won't change the voltage. The manual's safety section says not to connect it to a travel transformer or car inverter, as it may overheat or fail. Check your country's voltage in our compatibility table.
What about a step-down transformer?
We don't recommend it. The PS5 draws up to 350–390W, so you'd need a large, heavy transformer with at least twice that capacity, and Sony explicitly advises against it. Any resulting damage isn't covered by the warranty.
Extra limits on the “Japanese language only” edition
The PS5 Digital Edition Japanese language only (日本語専用) costs 55,000 yen. It wasn't repriced when other PS5 models went up in April 2026, and the lowest price on Kakaku.com is about 54,000 yen. The official site states that the system language is Japanese only, that it only works with PlayStation accounts whose country/region is set to Japan, and that it has no disc drive. Even if you solve the voltage problem, you can't use another language or a non-Japan account.
So what should visitors buy in Japan?
- To play at home: Nintendo Switch adapters are 100–240V, so they work in most countries. See The two versions of the Japanese Switch 2.
- The PS5 Pro has an official price of 137,980 yen. For a single item that expensive, check your country's duty-free allowance before you buy.
- If you already own a PS5 from your region: the PlayStation Portal charges via USB-C, so you can take it home and use it with your own PS5 (a stable home network is required).
