Whisky & Sake ウイスキー・日本酒

Japanese whisky from Suntory and Nikka, and sake such as Dassai, Kubota and Hakkaisan, come in more sizes and editions in Japan. Alcohol doesn't get the 8% reduced rate for food, so consumption tax is 10%. Whether you can fly with it depends on the ABV and quantity, and each destination sets its own duty-free alcohol allowance.

Before you buy a Whisky & Sake

  • Check the ABV before you fly: under Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism rules, drinks at 24% or less aren't dangerous goods; over 24% and up to 70% (whisky is usually 40–48%) are limited to 5L in total per person; over 70% can't be flown. All must stay in retail packaging. More ›
  • On international flights, carry-on liquids are limited to 100mL per container, so full bottles go in checked baggage; alcohol bought at duty-free shops after security can be taken on board, but may be confiscated when transferring abroad. More ›
  • Duty-free alcohol allowances differ by destination (Hong Kong, Singapore, Canada and the UK, for example, state them in litres); declare and pay duty on anything over, and check your destination's customs rules before you travel. More ›
  • Kakaku.com prices are the lowest online prices, excluding shipping; popular bottles are often limited in stores, and online prices can be much higher than shelf prices, so go by the actual price tag. More ›
  • From November 1, 2026, Japan's tax-free system changes to paying tax first and getting a refund after confirmation at departure; you must spend at least 5,000 yen (excluding tax) at the same store on the same day. More ›

Taking it home

  • Pack full bottles in checked baggage: on international flights carry-on liquids are limited to 100mL per container
  • Under Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism rules, drinks over 24% and up to 70% ABV are limited to 5L in total per person, and drinks over 70% can't be flown; all must stay in retail packaging, not decanted into a hip flask
  • Wrap bottles in clothes or bubble bags and stand them upright in the middle of your suitcase; if you're transferring on the way home, duty-free alcohol may be confiscated at the transfer security check
  • Duty-free alcohol allowances differ by destination and you must declare and pay duty on anything over; minors generally get no alcohol allowance, so check your destination's customs rules before you travel
  • Tax-free purchases made from November 1, 2026 must be confirmed at the airport tax-free kiosk before you check your bags, because you can't get them back out after check-in
