Matcha & Japanese Tea抹茶・日本茶

Matcha powder, hojicha, sencha and gyokuro from long-established Uji tea houses, plus instant matcha latte mixes. Unopened matcha powder usually keeps 4–8 months, but once opened it oxidizes and discolors quickly, so small tins you can finish in time are the better buy. Prepackaged tea is generally treated as ordinary food at customs.

Before you buy a Matcha & Japanese Tea

  • Decide the use first: for whisking your own tea, choose usucha grade; koicha grade is higher and pricier; for lattes and baking, entry-level or culinary matcha is enough. More ›
  • Opened matcha oxidizes and absorbs moisture and odors easily, so 20–40g tins suit personal use better than large bags. Names like "shiro" and "mukashi" at the same tea house are traditional naming conventions, not strict grades. More ›
  • Prepackaged tea and matcha powder are generally treated as ordinary food; bring a reasonable amount for personal use, and check your country's duty-free allowance for total overseas purchases. More ›
  • From November 1, 2026, Japan's tax-free system changes to paying the tax-inclusive price first and getting a refund after it is confirmed at departure. Food is taxed at the reduced 8% rate, so the refundable share is smaller than for appliances. More ›
  • Demand for matcha has surged in recent years, and some long-established shops are often sold out or limit purchases. If you want a specific product, check the official online stock first; department store counters outside the Kyoto main shops are also worth a try. More ›

Taking it home

  • Prepackaged matcha powder and tea leaves count as ordinary food and can go in carry-on or checked bags in reasonable personal-use amounts; fresh tea plant branches, leaves and seeds are not allowed (rules for travelers to mainland China; check your country's rules)
  • Matcha latte mixes contain dairy ingredients such as skim milk powder; they are processed foods, not the raw/fresh milk products that mainland China prohibits
  • Powder and leaves are not liquids and can go in carry-on bags; bottled tea drinks over 100mL should be checked
  • Matcha is sensitive to heat, humidity and odors: store it somewhere cool and dark, reseal after opening and finish it soon. If you keep it in the fridge, let the tin come back to room temperature before opening to avoid condensation
  • Mind your country's duty-free allowance: tea counts toward your total overseas purchases
