Which Japanese rice cookers work in Canada?

As of 2026-10-24, we checked 42 rice cookers sold in Japan. In Canada (120V, 60Hz, Type A/B outlets): 19 need an accessory, 23 will not work. None works as is.

Voltage 120V · Frequency 60Hz · Outlets Type A/B — Canadian outlets accept Japanese Type A plugs.

Works as is (0)

None.

Needs an accessory (19)

Reasons:

  • Most Japanese 100V rice cookers work in 110–120V regions; a step-down transformer with 100V output is recommended (19)Why: Some users report that when the local voltage runs high, their rice cooker showed an error code and would not cook, and that it worked normally after adding a step-down transformer; many other users report no problems without one. Choose a coil-type step-down transformer with 100V output, rated at least the cooker's wattage ÷ 0.8. Manufacturers do not support use outside Japan, and there is no warranty.

Will not work (23)

Reasons:

  • Different plug shape; you need a plug adapter (23)
  • Voltage not compatible: the rated voltage doesn't cover the local voltage (e.g. a Japan-only 100V model on 200–240V will burn out); transformers are not recommended for high-wattage appliances (22)
  • The manufacturer says to use it only at its rated voltage; the local voltage differs, so it will not work as is (1)Why: The manufacturer's manual or website states the conditions of use (e.g. "For 220 V AC only", "for use in mainland China only"); see the specification sources on the product page. Choose a model whose rated range covers your local voltage.
  • Frequency doesn't match; motor speed or timers may be affected (1)
