Can I take a shaver bought in Japan on a plane? Do I need to declare it at customs?
Yes. As of October 2026, the built-in lithium battery in an electric shaver is usually only a few Wh, far below 100Wh, so under Japan's MLIT rules it's allowed in both carry-on and checked baggage; if checked, turn it off and lock the switch, though carrying it on is recommended. Whether you need to declare it depends on your destination's customs rules; for mainland China, purchases abroad up to 5,000 yuan are duty-free, and a single indivisible item over 5,000 yuan is taxed in full.
Boarding
| Item | Carry-on | Checked | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electric shaver (built-in lithium battery) | Yes | Yes | If checked, turn it off and enable the travel lock to prevent accidental start |
| Shaver charger, cleaning station | Yes | Yes | — |
| Cleaning fluid (for the cleaning station) | Subject to liquid rules on international flights | Yes | Bottles over 100ml can't go in carry-on |
| Bladed razors | Generally no (T-shaped safety razors and small eyebrow razors are OK) | Yes | Final call is made at the security checkpoint |
MLIT also notes that airlines may have stricter rules, so follow your airline's notices. For general lithium battery rules, see Lithium battery rules for flights.
Tax-free procedure
For tax-free goods bought on or after November 1, 2026, customs checks them at a tax-free terminal at the airport when you leave Japan, and you must have every item on the same receipt with you. Carrying your shaver on board is recommended anyway, which makes it easy to show. See The complete guide to the new tax-free rules.
If you're entering mainland China
These are mainland China's rules. Check your own country's customs rules before you travel.
- Resident travelers' purchases abroad totaling up to 5,000 yuan (inclusive) are duty-free.
- Over 5,000 yuan: once customs confirms the goods are for personal use, only the amount above 5,000 yuan is taxed.
- A single indivisible item over 5,000 yuan is taxed in full. A shaver set is usually treated as one item and can't be split.
- Most high-end Japanese shavers are under 5,000 yuan, but together with other purchases you may go over the limit and need to use the declaration channel.
See The 5,000-yuan duty-free allowance.
Using it at home
Most mainstream Japanese shaver chargers are 100–240V with Type A flat-pin plugs. See the shaver buying guide. Check specific models on the shaver category page or with the compatibility checker.
